March 2012 Update

The end of an era – Australian Longboard Magazine winds down

Hi longboarders,

As you may know, the current issue of Australian Longboard magazine is the last. (Check out the Red Bluff story.)

The magazine was selling OK and the new landscape format was well received (tho it
did give the old blokes something else to winge about) but owing to the downturn
in the economic position of longboarding the full page adverts weren’t selling.

Morrison Media, run by bean counting shortboarders decided to pull the pin.

The State Wraps were put on the webpage a while back, despite opposition from the editor
but not one reader wrote to complain.

If you want to know why there is no money in longboarding, have a look at the shorts and
t-shirts you are wearing.

Do those companies support longboarding?. If you’re wearing anything by the big 3 or the
big American brands, the answer is NO.

Do they advertise in longboard magazines or sponsor longboard comps? NO.

Support the manufacturers who support longboarding.

Make sure you support your local surfboard manufacturer as well or he and his employees
will  be the next ones to go and we’ll all be riding made in China
junk!

The current report on the longboard clubs for 2012 and the first state round are the last
reports on the website so have a read as the website is closing shortly. Also
click on the current issue and read editor Bruce Channon’s final say on the
matter.

http://www.australianlongboarding.com.au

It’s been great fun taking the piss out of everyone for the last 10 or so years,
especially the Cott boys.

Thank you all for the friendship. We have a great camaraderie among the longboard
community, lets keep it up.

If anyone has any ideas, maybe a WA news report sent out regularly or one of those blog
thingies, please let me know.

We need to keep up to date on the latest fashion trends in Cottesloe or Mullalooloo’s
latest stubby holder.

See you all in the surf,

Malibu
Mick.

Second State Round Lancelin May 2011

Fegsy Lancelin State Round

By Hangfive McStoker
As could be expected the Indian Ocean Longboard Club cleaned up at the second State Round.  Even though the contest was held in a small beach break, something our membeers are not used to the boys went off just the same.  The contest was very well run by Justin Majeks, Surfing WA’s contest director and hosted by the Mullalooloo Longboard Club’s Ladies Auxiliary.  The Ladies Auxiliary and friends, including our very own Joanne Corbett, put on a wonderful spread on the Saturday night and hosted a booze up of monumental proportions.
Out in the water the best performance went to Sir Bob.  “Bob’s Bob and that’s that!”  as they say and Bob won both the over 55?s and over 60?s.  With a win in both divisions at Yallingup, Bob is State Champ in both divisions.
In the 60?s Mick Marlin came 3rd and in the 55?s Chris Fulston also placed 3rd.  Ray Barker won the 50?s from Richard Wain and Mr Hanky also came 2nd in the Over 45?s with Brett Merifield coming 4th.  Bill Gibson won the 40?s from Brett Merifield, while Chris Fulston won the Over 35?s.
Up and comer Mitch Corbett, who won the Junior Boys at Yallingup had to contend with 2nd at Lancelin, though he’ll no doubt do well in Denmark.  In the Open Men Dan Corbett was on fire and came 2nd to State Champ Rahn Goddard with Jarrad Foster coming 3rd.  In the judges tent Ray Barker, Greg Redfern and Mick Marlin kept it up (the judging that is) all weekend.  A credit to them.  All up a very successful weekend for the club.
The final round will be at Ocean Beach Denmark on the 25th and 26h June and hopefully our team will come back with a few more trophies.

President’s Report

Greetings Team
Well the last round was a cracker, maybe not so good in the waves department but a good club round followed by festivities.  Mick’s reunion red went down a treat with only a dozen bottles left and the sales raised around $700 for the club, so well done all those involved.  The round was sponsored by Lucy and Terry at Run Wild with some great winter jackets, thanks very much to them.
New Comps organiser Ray Barker ran a smooth comp with few hiccups.  Ray has suggested we have a small get together at the next round to explain how the handicap system works.  Ray has a wealth of judging experience and can help us all improve our almost perfect system.  Bribes may be an option.
Surfing WA held its presentations for the 2010 ;year at the recent Margaret River Masters.  At the round up photo for State Champs in their division IOLC had 7 State Champions, congratulations to all including Ray Barker who landed a spot judging for the Masters.  Great to see some very well known surfers gracing the event such as Ian Cairns, Taj Burrows and Murray Smith.  All were there to acknowledge their surfing roots.
Next round is July 4th, a bit of a break I know but 2 State rounds and Gero Comp make a mess of the club calendar.  Anyway the plan is if conditions allow a comp down Gracetown way with bonfire and BBQ at Bill’s shed after.  Good luck to all in the coming comps.  I’m heading north with Mick and Louie after the Gero comp chasing the sun and some fine left hand barrels!
See you in the Green Room.
Capt. Bill

Twentieth Anniversary Celebration

By Hangfive McStoker
Well what more can be said about our twentieth anniversary. King Billy summed it all up in his speech at the celebratrary dinner. Buggered if I can remember what Bill said as I’d consumed a few glasses of IOLBC Cab Sav, but what he said was momentous, historic, totally relevant and spot on.
Of course Rug just had to spoil it all by yelling out “pull the other one Bill!”  The dinner was a wonderful gathering of the old and the new, with diners ranging from original members right up to first timers. The food and drink were superb, as was the company.
Did I just mention the Cab Sav, geez what a drop, and my missus uses the remnants in the bottle to clean the bath with. Thanks to all the mob who did the work on the wine, Mick, Lou, Nigel  and a huge thank you to Prive who watched over the proceedings and mopped up and spillage and disposed of it. “Down the hatch boys!” was the catch cry from his deck chair during the afternoon. The inaugural batch has sold out and raised $730.35c for the club. Plus the club has a case for prizes and bribes. Stay tuned for the summer white to be released early summer.
The contest that morning was typical, “you shooda been here yesterday!” still we didn’t have to worry about crowds as nobody in their right mind would surf such rubbish. But it was a case of go for it as no other options were available. That Mr. Barker chappie knows his stuff. As usual guys like Mick and Corbo caught their share of either nothing or one wave, while Billy and young Corbo caught a hundred waves in twenty minutes. Congratulations to the winners who I forgot, but you’ll read about elsewhere.
Check the photos under Events/Social - a great night had by all.
